Digital Sleep-Wake Cycle Metrics and Dementia Prediction in Older Adults

Are sleep-wake cycle metrics associated with incident dementia, and do they contribute to dementia prediction?In this cohort study of 53 448 UK Biobank participants, 9 accelerometer-derived metrics of daytime activity, sleep, and chronotype predicted dementia and were combined into 2 components. Both components were associated with higher dementia risk and made a modest but statistically significant contribution to dementia prediction, equivalent to that of genotype; results were confirmed in the validation cohort.Results show that sleep-wake cycle metrics may be important for dementia; future studies should evaluate their clinical utility as scalable, early markers alongside established predictors for dementia risk.
