Federal Policy Changes and Career Stability Among NIH K-Award Recipients

How are federal policy changes associated with early-career National Institutes of Health (NIH)–funded investigators’ perceptions of career stability?In this cross-sectional study of 1904 NIH K-award recipients, 18% reported being much less likely to continue conducting research than 1 year prior, and 18% reported funding disruptions. Respondents identifying as members of underrepresented racial or ethnic groups or as disabled were more likely to report career instability.This cross-sectional study suggests strain in the biomedical research workforce as a result of federal policy changes.
