Personalized Decision-Making in Risk-Reducing Surgery of the Ovaries

What are the factors that women consider when making complex decisions regarding risk-reducing surgery for ovarian cancer risk?This survey study in 355 premenopausal women with familial or hereditary risk of ovarian cancer found that participants significantly preferred risk-reducing salpingo-oophorectomy overall. Increased risk of osteoporosis and heart disease reduced this preference.Results of this study suggest that counseling models that provide reliable information about the surgery and its sequelae may improve the decision-making process.
