Economic and Resource Use–Related Guidance in US Medical Societies’ Clinical Practice Guidelines

In an era emphasizing value-based care, what proportion of recent clinical practice guideline recommendations include economic or resource use–related guidance?In this cross-sectional study of 309 clinical practice guidelines and 7582 recommendations, 14 of 23 large US-based medical societies explicitly suggested that economic or resource use–related evidence be considered when developing guidelines, 22.5% of recommendations issued from 2019 to 2023 narratively discussed economic or resource use–related evidence, and 3.8% had an upfront economic or resource use–related statement.These findings suggest that more high-quality, health-economic evidence and clarification by societies as to how they appraise such evidence may allow clinical practice guidelines to better inform value-based care.
