Do barriers to healthy eating, assessed using a validated screener, differ across sociodemographic groups, and are they associated with prevalent health conditions? In this cross-sectional study that included 3000 adults, barriers to healthy eating differed significantly by race, ethnicity, gender, and income and were independently associated with higher odds of diabetes, heart disease, and obesity, even after adjustment for nutrition security status. The findings indicate that barriers to nutrition security are unequally distributed across sociodemographic subgroups in the US and may be linked to diet-related health conditions, suggesting that more targeted and tailored interventions may be warranted.
