Workplace Accommodations and Attrition Among Physicians With Disabilities

Are physicians with disabilities more likely to leave the workforce or reduce practice, and how many of these physicians receive accommodations?In this survey study of 5917 US physicians, respondents with disabilities were more than twice as likely to consider leaving medicine and nearly twice as likely to reduce or pause clinical practice compared with their peers without disabilities. Among physicians with disabilities, 80% reported receiving accommodations.These findings suggest that physicians with disabilities are at greater risk of workforce attrition due to burnout, health conditions, and unsafe work environments; accommodations may reduce this risk.
