Biomarkers, Cognitive Function, and Mortality in Centenarians

Are plasma amyloid-β42 and 40 (Aβ42/40), phosphorylated tau 181 (p-tau181), and neurofilament light chain (NfL) associated with cognitive function and all-cause mortality in centenarians?In this cohort study of 495 centenarians aged 100 years or older, lower Aβ42/40 and higher plasma NfL levels were associated with lower cognitive function, higher NfL levels were also associated with increased risk of all-cause mortality. There were no significant associations for Aβ42/40 and p-tau181.These findings suggest plasma NfL may serve as a robust biomarker of neurodegeneration and mortality in extreme aging.
