Maternal Vaccine Receipt and Infant Hospital and Emergency Visits for Influenza and Pertussis

Are maternal influenza and Tdap vaccinations associated with influenza- and pertussis-related hospitalizations and emergency department (ED) visits in infants younger than 6 months?In this cohort study of 84 348 mother-infant dyads in the influenza cohort and 171 141 mother-infant dyads in the Tdap cohort, a strong negative association between maternal influenza and Tdap vaccinations and influenza- and pertussis-related hospitalization or ED visits in infants younger than 6 months was found, with an estimated vaccine effectiveness of 69.7% and 88.6%, respectively. Additionally, our findings confirm the suboptimal vaccine uptake in Italy.These findings suggest support for the current recommendations for administering the Tdap and influenza vaccines during pregnancy and underline the urgent need to implement strategies to improve their acceptance.
