Vaginal Estrogen Utilization Among Medicare Beneficiaries With Genitourinary Syndrome of Menopause

How prevalent is low-dose vaginal estrogen use for the treatment of genitourinary syndrome of menopause?In this cohort study of more than 1 million Medicare beneficiaries, 9.0% of women with a diagnosis indicative of genitourinary syndrome of menopause filled a prescription for vaginal estrogen at a median of 15 months after diagnosis.This study found that the vast majority of patients with symptoms of genitourinary syndrome of menopause did not fill a vaginal estrogen prescription, suggesting that additional research is needed to improve our understanding of symptoms and facilitate care.
