Is implementation of policies with different exposure standards for ambient particulate matter with an aerodynamic diameter of 2.5 µm or less (PM) associated with a risk of hospitalization for major cardiovascular diseases? In this cohort study of 502 133 participants with data from the UK Biobank, implementing a hypothetical intervention for reducing PM exposure by 5% if it is above the thresholds of 12 and 9 µg/m would significantly reduce the 5-year risk of hospitalization for stroke, heart failure, and myocardial infarction, but not for arrhythmia. These findings suggest that further strengthening the current ambient PM regulations in the United Kingdom could provide benefits for cardiovascular health.
