Does eye movement desensitization and reprocessing (EMDR) therapy reduce personality disorder (PD) symptoms, regardless of posttraumatic stress disorder status? In this randomized clinical trial including 159 patients with PD, results of EMDR therapy were superior to those of a waiting-list control group in reducing PD symptoms post treatment and at follow-up. PD remission was significantly more common in the EMDR group compared with the control group at both time points. In this study, EMDR therapy demonstrated clinically meaningful reductions in PD symptoms, with nearly one-half of participants achieving diagnostic remission, supporting its potential as an effective intervention for PDs.
