Is peer influence among physicians associated with their adoption of opportunistic salpingectomy as a method of tubal sterilization to help reduce ovarian cancer risk?In this cohort study, among 4520 patients undergoing postpartum sterilization and 3376 patients undergoing interval sterilization, there were 2.17-fold and 4.16-fold significantly higher odds of receiving opportunistic salpingectomy, respectively, if operating surgeons previously shared patients with other physicians who had the highest quartile of baseline opportunistic salpingectomy rate. These findings suggest physician peer influence may play an important role in salpingectomy uptake for ovarian cancer prevention.
