Health and Social Support in the Aftermath of the Maui Wildfires

What are the midterm health outcomes among individuals exposed to the 2023 Maui wildfires, and how is social support associated with these outcomes?In this cohort study of 1174 adults enrolled 6 to 14 months after the wildfires, 22% demonstrated reduced lung function and 50% screened positive for depressive symptoms. Greater wildfire exposure was associated with increased symptom burden, while higher perceived social support was associated with fewer psychological symptoms.These findings highlight the need for sustained clinical monitoring and community-based mental health support months after the disaster, particularly for individuals with limited social resources.
