New-Onset Mental Illness Among Gestational Carriers

What is the rate of new-onset mental illness among gestational carriers during and after pregnancy?In this population-based cohort study of 767 406 pregnancies in women from Ontario, Canada, the incidence rate per 100 person-years of new-onset mental illness was 5.2 among non–gestational carriers with unassisted conception, 5.0 among non–gestational carriers who conceived by in vitro fertilization, and 6.9 among gestational carriers.These findings suggest that gestational carriers were more likely to be newly diagnosed with mental illness during and after pregnancy, which may warrant enhanced mental health screening, counseling, and provision of support for this population.
