Human Papillomavirus Diversity in Asian Individuals With Cutaneous Squamous Cell Carcinoma

While the association between human papillomavirus (HPV) and cutaneous squamous cell carcinoma (cSCC) has been investigated extensively in White populations, what are the data for Asian populations?This case-control study of 37 Asian organ transplant recipients and 48 immunocompetent patients with cSCC identified 65 HPV genotypes (38 β-HPV, 15 γ-HPV, 12 α-HPV); site-specific distribution showed 56 genotypes in eyebrow hair, 30 in cSCC, and 17 in warts, with β-HPV exhibiting the greatest overlap across all 3 sites. α-HPV viral load was higher in organ transplant recipients, whereas immunocompetent patients tended to have higher β-HPV viral loads.There are differences in the distribution of HPV genotypes in Asian patients with cSCC, compared to published studies in White populations.
