Characteristics of Participants Screened and Randomized to the Melanoma Self Surveillance Trial

What are the characteristics of participants screened and randomized to the Melanoma Self Surveillance (MEL-SELF) randomized clinical trial?In this secondary analysis, of 1226 patients who were screened, 504 were randomized in the MEL-SELF trial to either patient-led surveillance (n = 251) or clinician-led surveillance (n = 253). At baseline, 232 (46%) reported clinically significant levels of fear of melanoma recurrence, 103 (20%) had not performed skin self-examination (SSE) in the previous year, 252 of 503 (50%) lacked confidence in performing SSE, and 460 (91%) were confident in using digital devices.The MEL-SELF trial will provide evidence on whether patient-led surveillance can support patients to undertake effective SSE, leading to early detection of melanoma and improved psychological outcomes.
