Risk of New-Onset and Recurrent Depression and Anxiety Among Patients With Hidradenitis Suppurativa

Is the disease severity of hidradenitis suppurativa (HS) an independent factor associated with risk of depression and anxiety?In this cohort study of 10 206 patients with HS and 40 125 controls, an increased risk of new-onset depression and anxiety was found for patients with HS. Disease severity, as measured by treatments received and hospitalizations for HS-related surgical procedures, was not directly associated with a difference in risk of developing depression or anxiety.These findings suggest that patients with HS may be vulnerable to mental disorders across all levels of disease severity, highlighting the importance of systematic screening and addressing mental health concerns in this population.
