Serum Neurofilament Light Chain and Cardiovascular Outcomes in Patients With Atrial Fibrillation

Are serum levels of neurofilament light chain (sNfL) associated with adverse cardiovascular outcomes in patients with atrial fibrillation (AF)?In this cohort study of 2311 patients with AF, increasing sNfL levels were significantly associated with an increased risk of major vascular events, nonfatal stroke, cardiovascular mortality, heart failure hospitalization, and all-cause mortality.The findings in this study suggest that sNfL, a specific marker of neuronal injury, may be useful in identifying patients with AF who are at heightened cardiovascular risk, providing novel insights beyond traditional cardiovascular risk factors.
