Food Supplementation in Patients Hospitalized for Heart Failure
JAMA Cardiology 10.1001/jamacardio.2026.0435April 08, 2026 at 11:00 AM EDT
Is food supplementation with delivery of medically tailored meals or fresh produce feasible and does it affect clinical outcomes compared with usual care in patients recently hospitalized with heart failure (HF)?In this randomized clinical trial of 150 participants, 90-day food supplementation demonstrated high feasibility and acceptability, with fresh produce superior to medically tailored meals. Food supplementation was not associated with reduced hospitalizations or emergency department visits for HF with or without delivery conditional on health care engagement. The results of this study indicate that food supplementation was feasible and well accepted but did not demonstrate differences in clinical outcomes.
