Spectrum of Primary Aldosteronism and Risk of Cardiovascular Outcomes

Is the spectrum of primary aldosteronism, reflected by higher aldosterone-renin ratio (ARR), associated with incident cardiovascular disease in older adults?In this cohort study of 3477 community-dwelling adults without baseline cardiovascular disease, higher ARR was associated with increased risks of atrial fibrillation and ischemic stroke during 9 years of follow-up but not with heart failure or myocardial infarction.Results demonstrate that the spectrum of primary aldosteronism may contribute to atrial fibrillation and stroke risk in older adults, suggesting aldosterone pathways as a potential target for cardiovascular prevention.
