Implications of the 2026 Dyslipidemia Guideline for Primary Prevention Statin Therapy

How does the 2026 American Heart Association/American College of Cardiology/multisociety guideline on the management of dyslipidemia change the US population eligible for statins for primary prevention? In this nationally representative study of 4366 US adults aged 30 to 79 years, it was estimated that the 2026 guideline would expand statin eligibility to 21.5 million adults not previously recommended statins. An estimated 87.5 million US adults, 56.6% of the target population, are eligible for statins, including more than 93% of adults aged 70 to 79 years. The 2026 dyslipidemia guideline substantially expands the US population eligible for primary prevention statin therapy.
