EMBARGOED FOR RELEASE: 11 A.M. (ET), TUESDAY, MAY 10, 2022
Media advisory: To contact the U.S. Preventive Services Task Force, email the Media Coordinator at Newsroom@USPSTF.net or call 301-951-9203. The full report and related articles are linked to this news release.
Bottom Line: The U.S. Preventive Services Task Force (USPSTF) recommends against screening for chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD) in asymptomatic adults who do not recognize or report respiratory symptoms. Chronic obstructive pulmonary disease is an irreversible reduction of airflow in the lungs. Progression to severe disease can prevent participation in normal activities because of deterioration of lung function. In 2020 it was estimated that approximately 6% of U.S. adults had been diagnosed with COPD. The USPSTF routinely makes recommendations about the effectiveness of preventive care services and this statement is a reaffirmation of its 2016 recommendation statement.

About The Study: In a nonurban stroke network in Germany, deployment of a flying intervention team to local stroke centers, compared with patient interhospital transfer to referral centers, was significantly associated with shorter time to endovascular thrombectomy (EVT) for patients with acute ischemic stroke. The findings may support consideration of a flying intervention team for some stroke systems of care, although further research is needed to confirm long-term clinical outcomes and to understand applicability to other geographic settings.

About The Study: Researchers examined racial and ethnic disparities in health insurance coverage among Black and Hispanic adults compared with white adults ages 60 to 64. Congress is considering several health policy reforms, including lowering the eligibility age for Medicare from 65 to 60, which could help reduce any disparities in coverage.

About The Study: Researchers examined whether the Autism Diagnostic Observation Schedule, Second Edition (ADOS-2), the reference standard measure of autism spectrum disorder, is systematically biased across race and sex. The findings suggest that the ADOS-2 doesn’t have widespread systematic measurement bias across race or sex. However, the findings raise some concerns around underdetection that warrant further research.

EMBARGOED FOR RELEASE: 11 A.M. (ET), TUESDAY, APRIL 26, 2022
Media advisory: To contact the U.S. Preventive Services Task Force, email the Media Coordinator at Newsroom@USPSTF.net or call 301-951-9203. The full report and related articles are linked to this news release.
Bottom Line: The U.S. Preventive Services Task Force (USPSTF) has updated and changed its recommendation on low-dose aspirin use to prevent cardiovascular disease (CVD). The USPSTF now recommends against initiating low-dose aspirin use for the primary prevention of CVD in adults 60 years or older. The decision to initiate low-dose aspirin use for the primary prevention of CVD in adults ages 40 to 59 years who have a 10% or greater 10-year CVD risk should be an individual one. Evidence indicates that the net benefit of aspirin use in this group is small. Those who are not at increased risk for bleeding and are willing to take low-dose aspirin daily are more likely to benefit. The USPSTF also has concluded the evidence is unclear whether aspirin use reduces the risk of colorectal cancer incidence or death. The USPSTF routinely makes recommendations about the effectiveness of preventive care services and this recommendation replaces the 2016 USPSTF recommendation on aspirin use to prevent CVD and colorectal cancer.
