On weekdays, the journal publishes peer-reviewed clinical research and commentary in more than 40 medical and health subject areas. Every article is free online from the day of publication.
About The Study: This cross-sectional study of U.S. hospitals found that a widespread technology outage after a faulty cyber security software update on July 19, 2024, was associated with outages in patient-facing network services integral to care delivery. These findings suggest that internet measurement techniques may be useful for surveillance and study of critical digital health care infrastructure.

About The Study: Over time, physician exit from traditional Medicare has increased. This result is consistent with earlier findings, but exits remained high even after the pandemic, which likely accelerated some physicians’ exit. The findings may reflect multiple factors, including the greater burden of new communication methods (e.g., portal messages) and demands for clinical documentation.

About The Study: In this retrospective cohort study, COVID-19 booster vaccinations were associated with significant protection against severe COVID-19, with a favorable number needed to vaccinate among persons with cancer. However, uptake of COVID-19 vaccine boosters was low, and interventions are therefore justified to increase COVID-19 vaccine uptake in this high-risk population.

About The Study: In this nationally representative cross-sectional study of U.S. children and adolescents, prevalence of extremely severe obesity significantly increased over time, particularly among older adolescents and non-Hispanic Black participants. Extremely severe obesity was associated with severe metabolic and cardiovascular complications, including metabolic dysfunction–associated steatotic liver disease, prediabetes or diabetes, severe insulin resistance, and metabolic syndrome. These findings emphasize the urgent need for public health interventions and policies to address pediatric obesity broadly.

About The Study: In this analytical model study, influenza vaccination provided substantial benefit in reducing infections to both the vaccinated and unvaccinated portions of the population. Even when both vaccine effectiveness and vaccine uptake were low, vaccination showed marked reductions in disease burden for transmission levels characteristic of seasonal influenza. However, when the level of transmission was very high, even a highly effective vaccine did not protect unvaccinated individuals. These findings underscore the importance of vaccination in disease prevention and control and show that indirect benefits are limited in high transmission situations.

About The Study: This study found that among pediatric patients hospitalized with COVID-19, Black and Hispanic children were disproportionately more likely to be hospitalized for COVID-19 and experience severe disease compared with white and Asian or Pacific Islander children. A higher proportion of hospitalized Black children had underlying medical conditions. This study underlines the need for targeted interventions, particularly for children with underlying medical conditions, and the need for equitable access and use of vaccines and therapeutics for disproportionately affected populations.

About The Study: In this longitudinal cohort study, recreational cannabis legalization was associated with more cannabis and electronic nicotine delivery systems use after 5 years and no significant change in cigarette use. Furthermore, cannabis use increased over time, underscoring the importance of studying commercialization policy going forward. Based on the present results, it is unlikely recreational cannabis legalization has been associated with a large increase in cigarette use, but increases in use of cannabis and vaped nicotine bear close monitoring as retail cannabis rapidly expands.

About The Study: In this cross-sectional study, stronger gun laws correlated with decreased overall firearm mortality, with the strongest correlations for decreased suicides. For firearm suicide, this analyses lend support to policies that regulate firearm sales, transfers, and permitting laws. While some gun law categories were correlated with decreased firearm homicide, sociodemographic factors, such as unemployment, poverty, and insurance status, correlated with larger changes, suggesting policies that address root causes of violence through economic mobility and access to robust social, health, and educational services may be associated with a greater reduction in homicides.

About The Study: In this multicenter randomized clinical trial, a nontargeted screening approach was superior to targeted screening for identifying new hepatitis C virus infections among patients seen in 3 urban emergency departments. The substantial decrease in patients who went from diagnosis to sustained virologic response at 12 weeks highlights an urgent need for innovative models of hepatitis C virus treatment.

About The Study: This study found that California life expectancy remained lower in 2024 than in 2019, due primarily to non–COVID-19 causes. COVID-19 accounted for 12.8% of the deficit in 2024. Although a prior analysis of California data reported that the life expectancy–income gradient increased during 2020-2021, by 2024 the gap between Q1 and Q4 returned to pre-pandemic levels. Life expectancy in the Black population was much lower than in other racial and ethnic populations, and Black and Hispanic populations experienced the largest deficits.

About The Article: This JAMA Insights examines the epidemiology, diagnosis, and management of eastern equine encephalitis virus (EEEV) disease in the U.S. following a recent increase in reported cases. This virus is the cause of a rare mosquito-borne disease in the U.S. that causes substantial morbidity and mortality. People at highest risk of EEEV infection are those living in or visiting endemic forested areas near swamps or marshes and those whose occupations (e.g., agricultural work) or hobbies (e.g., camping, gardening) involve outdoor exposure.

Intra-arterial Tenecteplase for Acute Stroke After Successful Endovascular Therapy
JAMA
EMBARGOED FOR RELEASE: 3 A.M. ET, SATURDAY, JULY 5, 2025
Media advisory: The full study is linked to this news release. This study is being presented at the 11th Annual Conference of the Chinese Stroke Association & Tiantan International Stroke Conference 2025.

About The Study: In patients with acute large vessel occlusion presenting between 4.5 and 24 hours of symptom onset, intra-arterial tenecteplase after successful thrombectomy had a greater likelihood of excellent neurological outcome at 90 days without increasing the risk of symptomatic intracranial hemorrhage or mortality. However, because none of the secondary efficacy analyses supported the primary finding, further trials are needed to confirm the results.

Cannabidiol and Liver Enzyme Level Elevations in Healthy Adults
JAMA Internal Medicine

About The Study: In this randomized double-blind clinical trial of healthy adults administered cannabidiol (CBD), 5 mg/kg/d for 28 days, 8 (5.6%) experienced liver enzyme level elevations and 7 (4.9%) met protocol defined criteria for potential drug-induced liver injury. Participants did not experience clinical symptoms related to liver function during this 28-day study and hepatic enzymes returned to normal within 1 to 2 weeks following discontinuation. The findings of this study underscore the need for further investigation on the long-term effects of CBD use, its impact on various populations, and the safety of lower doses commonly used by consumers.

About The Study: Nearly one-third of U.S. adults would not or might not test for suspected COVID-19, largely because they do not see value in testing, according to the results of an online national survey. Test hesitancy may delay oral antiviral initiation and could result in missed opportunities to limit transmission. Efforts are needed to increase awareness of the value of testing.

About JAMA Network Open: JAMA Network Open is an online-only open access general medical journal from the JAMA Network. On weekdays, the journal publishes peer-reviewed clinical research and commentary in more than 40 medical and health subject areas. Every article is free online from the day of publication.
About The Study: This cohort study of older participants found accelerated decreases in cognition among individuals hospitalized for SARS-CoV-2 infection, but not nonhospitalized infection, in comparison with individuals not yet infected. These findings suggest that avoiding severe SARS-CoV-2 infection could help preserve cognitive function among older adults.
