International Trends in Head and Neck Cancer Mortality

What are the long-term global and national mortality trends in head and neck cancer (HNC) and its major anatomical subsites?In this study using population-based analysis of 73 countries, overall HNC age-standardized mortality decreased from 2001 to 2023, with greater reductions among male individuals. Divergent patterns were observed across subsites, including substantial declines in laryngeal cancer mortality and increases in oropharyngeal cancer mortality in many countries.Results of this study suggest that, although overall HNC age-standardized mortality has decreased, persistent variation across subsites and countries underscores the need for subtype-specific prevention strategies and continued global surveillance.
