Preterm Infant Stress During Noncontact Handheld Optical Coherence Tomography and Contact Fundus Photography

Does preterm infant stress from noncontact optical coherence tomography (OCT) imaging differ from that of contact fundus photography during imaging for retinopathy of prematurity (ROP)?This cohort study of 397 imaging sessions from 59 infants showed that indicators of behavioral (crying and grimacing) and physiological (heart rate and oxygen saturation) stress were lower for OCT, regardless of which imaging modality was performed first. The incidence of adverse events was overall low but greater for fundus photography.These findings suggest that noncontact OCT is less stressful than contact fundus photography in preterm infants undergoing ROP examination.
