Trypan Blue Use During Cataract Surgery and Postoperative Fungal Endophthalmitis

What were the clinical course and findings among 6 patients with postoperative fungal endophthalmitis following cataract surgery in Japan?In this case series of 6 patients with postoperative fungal endophthalmitis after cataract surgery in Japan, was identified in the aqueous humor and the vitreous. The same organism was detected in the trypan blue solution from the dispensing bottle prepared from the laboratory-use agent with filtration.Postoperative fungal endophthalmitis was most likely caused by the off-label use of contaminated trypan blue solution during the cataract surgery, as the original solution appeared to be contaminated beyond the sterilizing ability of the filter.
