Hormonal Contraception and Initiation of Semaglutide Therapy

Is hormonal contraception use associated with initiation of semaglutide therapy? In this case-control study including 22 964 first-time semaglutide users and 229 640 matched nonusers, all types of hormonal contraception utilization patterns were associated with semaglutide initiation compared with nonuse, in particular for females with a history of using multiple types of hormonal contraception. These findings suggest that hormonal contraception use may identify females who are more likely to initiate pharmacologic weight management, emphasizing the relevance to examine factors associated with weight management in females.
