State Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program Policies and Cardiovascular Mortality

Are state Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program (SNAP) policies that impact participation associated with county-level cardiovascular mortality rates in the US?In this cross-sectional study of 3127 US counties, a 1-point absolute increase in an index of state SNAP polices (range, 0 to 10) was associated with a 1.02% lower county cardiovascular mortality rate between 2006 and 2019.These findings suggest that SNAP policies that increase participation among food-insecure individuals may play a role in improving cardiovascular health.
