Enrollment in Integrated Special Needs Plans Among Dually Eligible Beneficiaries With Serious Mental Illness

How has enrollment in integrated dual-eligible special needs plans (D-SNPs) changed relative to other Medicare coverage options among dually eligible beneficiaries with serious mental illness (SMI)?This cohort study of 719 542 dually eligible beneficiaries with a diagnosis of SMI found that integrated D-SNP enrollment increased from 2.4% in 2019 to 17.2% in 2022, while enrollment in traditional Medicare decreased from 58.6% to 42.6%. Disenrollment was lower from integrated D-SNPs than from other Medicare options.Integrated D-SNP enrollment has increased among dually eligible beneficiaries with SMI; low disenrollment may suggest a high level of beneficiary satisfaction, but uneven state availability limits access to integrated D-SNPs.
