Global Aid Cuts and Local Health Consequences in Nakivale Refugee Settlement, Uganda

What are the perspectives and experiences of health care practitioners in Nakivale Refugee Settlement in Uganda following substantial reductions in humanitarian funding?In this qualitative study of 26 health care practitioners—including physicians, midwives, nurses, and laboratory staff—participants described profound disruptions to health care services, supply chains, and staffing conditions, and discussed their predictions and recommendations for sustaining care.Restoring and strategically targeting humanitarian aid is essential, with investments prioritized for high-impact leverage points, including prenatal nutrition and immunization incentives, fuel for transport, supply redistribution, and salaries for health care practitioners, while building long-term resilience through refugee-led organizations and policies that integrate refugees into civilian labor markets.
