Phototherapy, Morbidity, and Mortality in Very Preterm Newborns

Is phototherapy for hyperbilirubinemia safe in very preterm newborns less than 32 weeks of gestational age?In this cohort study of 4970 very preterm Swedish newborns, phototherapy for 6 to 7 days was not associated with higher odds for neonatal mortality after the first week of life than phototherapy for 0 to 3 or 4 to 5 days.These findings suggest that longer exposure to phototherapy is not associated with increased neonatal mortality in very preterm newborns.
