Institutional Special Needs Plans and End-of-Life Outcomes for Nursing Home Residents With Dementia

How do Institutional Special Needs Plans (I-SNPs) affect end-of-life outcomes for nursing home residents with dementia?In this cohort study of 1.4 million decedents with dementia who died in nursing homes between 2013 and 2022, I-SNP enrollees had significantly lower rates of hospitalization, intensive care unit admission, and mechanical ventilation in the last month of life, but no differences in hospice use, compared to decedents not enrolled in I-SNP.I-SNPs were associated with reductions in potentially burdensome interventions at the end of life for nursing home residents with dementia.
