Dapagliflozin and Acute Kidney Injury Following Cardiac Surgery

Among patients undergoing elective cardiac surgery, does dapagliflozin, initiated 1 day prior to surgery, reduce acute kidney injury at 7 days after surgery? In this randomized clinical trial that included 784 patients undergoing elective cardiac surgery, compared with placebo, dapagliflozin significantly reduced the incidence of postoperative acute kidney injury during the 7 days following surgery (52% vs 28%). In patients undergoing elective cardiac surgery, these findings support prescribing dapagliflozin to prevent acute kidney injury during the 7-day postoperative period.
