Mesh Placement and Risk of Recurrence and Bowel Obstruction After Primary Ventral Hernia Repair

What is the association between mesh placement and risk of reoperation for recurrence and bowel obstruction after elective primary ventral hernia repair?In this nationwide register-based cohort study of 17 832 Danish patients, retromuscular mesh placement and intraperitoneal onlay mesh were associated with a higher risk of reoperation for recurrence and bowel obstruction compared with onlay mesh placement, while preperitoneal mesh placement was not associated with these outcomes.Onlay and preperitoneal mesh placement may be preferable options for primary ventral hernia repair when considering the risks of recurrence and bowel obstruction.
