Nationwide Implementation of Multimodal Prehabilitation and Complications After Colorectal Cancer Surgery

What is the association of a standardized 4-week supervised multimodal prehabilitation program with postoperative complications among unselected patients undergoing elective colorectal cancer resection in the Netherlands?In this large propensity score–matched cohort study of nearly 2400 patients undergoing colorectal cancer surgery in the Netherlands, participation in a 4-week standardized supervised multimodal prehabilitation program was associated with a reduction in both surgical and nonsurgical complications and a shorter hospital stay, regardless of age and American Society of Anesthesiologists score.Results suggest that a standardized multimodal prehabilitation program may not only reduce the occurrence of complications but also mitigate their adverse impact by improving preoperative functional capacity.
