Mortality After Piperacillin-Tazobactam–Resistant vs –Susceptible Bloodstream Infection

Do or bloodstream infections that are resistant to piperacillin-tazobactam (TZP) present higher risk of mortality compared with TZP-susceptible infections? In this cohort study of 34 379 patients from Danish national health registers, there was a crude association between TZP-resistant bloodstream infections and increased mortality risk compared with TZP-susceptible bloodstream infections. However, this association was no longer present after adjusting for baseline risk factors. The findings suggest clinical comorbidities associated with TZP-resistant bloodstream infections may explain the apparent higher mortality risk compared with TZP-susceptible bloodstream infections.
