Accelerated Epigenetic and Inflammatory Aging and Intrinsic Capacity
JAMA Network Open 10.1001/jamanetworkopen.2026.24102July 20, 2026 at 11:00 AM EDT
Are accelerated epigenetic and inflammatory aging associated with intrinsic capacity (IC) decline across the adult lifespan? In this cohort study of 970 individuals, a significant association between accelerated epigenetic aging and lower global IC was observed, with a greater detrimental outcome with advancing chronological age that became particularly pronounced in older individuals. Accelerated inflammatory aging showed comparatively weaker and less consistent associations with lower global IC across chronological age. These findings suggest that biomarkers derived from epigenetic and, to a lesser extent, inflammatory aging clocks may help advance healthy longevity precision medicine.
