Octenidine or Sterile Water Cleansing and Late-Onset Sepsis in Neonates in the NICU

Does daily skin cleansing with octenidine compared with sterile water reduce the risk of late-onset neonatal sepsis in neonates admitted to the neonatal intensive care unit?In this randomized clinical trial of 530 neonates, the incidence of late-onset neonatal sepsis was similar in neonates cleansed with octenidine wipes (15%) and sterile water (13%). Both interventions were safe, with low rates of adverse skin reactions.This trial found no evidence to suggest that octenidine skin cleansing offers any advantage over sterile water in preventing late-onset neonatal sepsis.
