Kidney Morbidity in Pediatric Patients With Spina Bifida

What is the long-term risk of developing chronic kidney disease (CKD) and end-stage renal disease (ESRD) among pediatric patients with spina bifida?Among 12 868 patients with spina bifida included in this cohort study, the incidence rates of CKD and ESRD were 2.7 and 0.3 per 1000 person-years, respectively, compared with 0.3 and 0.01 per 1000 person-years in the general population. Factors significantly associated with CKD in patients with spina bifida were earlier birth year, male sex, greater number of comorbidities, history of diabetes, upper tract calculi, complex urinary infections, and urologic surgery.These findings suggest that pediatric patients with spina bifida have significantly increased risk of kidney morbidity, signaling the importance of early engagement with multidisciplinary pediatric care.
