Acute Respiratory Tract Infections and Severe Disease Among Hospitalized Children

What factors are associated with risk of severe disease among children hospitalized with acute respiratory infections?In this cohort study of 2585 children hospitalized with acute respiratory tract infections, 21.3% developed severe disease. Having 2 or more chronic conditions and being transferred from a referring hospital were associated with a higher risk of severe outcomes.These findings suggest that understanding the risks of severe disease can help inform clinical management and resource allocation in caring for hospitalized children with respiratory infections.
