Lymph Node Dissection and Postoperative Complications After Lung Cancer Resection

Is lymph node sampling of at least 3 N2 (mediastinal) and 1 N1 (hilar) nodal stations (3 + 1 rule) associated with more postoperative complications?In this cohort study of 28 439 patients, the 3 + 1 rule was not associated with an increased incidence of postoperative complications in a matched cohort of patients with early-stage non–small cell lung cancer who underwent lung resection.This study’s findings support the continued use of the 3 + 1 rule in terms of overall safety profile in concordance with current recommendations from the National Comprehensive Cancer Network and American College of Surgeons Commission on Cancer.
